When Biases Hurt Your Job Hunt

It may be the 21st Century but biases and discrimination still exist in the job hunt world across industries, including in banking. Ageism, sexism, racism and so on are, unfortunately, still around.

And it’s a global issue. Financial services and other animals.

So, spare a thought for a particular Irish teacher. She got a shock when she received an email explaining why she was being turned down for a job in South Korea she saw advertised on Craigslist.

It wasn’t based on her qualifications or the fact that some schools prefer someone from North America because they prefer the accent.

No, Katie Mulrennan from County Kerry was told that it was due to the perceived drinking habits of Irish people that she was turned down. At first, she thought the email from the agency was a hoax, but it proved not to be.

The email read:

“Dear Katie,

I am sorry to inform you that my client does not hire Irish people due to the alcoholism nature of your kind.

Best of luck in the future.”

There were no details on the site of who the recruiter was, and she has since reported the advert to Craiglist. Ms Mulrennan has since found a new employer.

This is the world we live in, unfortunately. Some things don’t change. Be prepared for that in your banking job hunt as well.
